Anne Alberts on her first year as a supply chain consultant

From econometrics to supply chain consulting

Almost a year ago, Anne Alberts joined 4Supplychain as a consultant. Before that, she studied econometrics in Amsterdam, where she still lives. In the past year, she has already worked on a range of projects within logistics. What surprised her most was how much ownership she was given right from the start. "You're really taken along in the whole project, and you're encouraged to bring your own ideas."

First months
In under a year, she’s already done various projects such as building a simulation model to determine warehouse capacity, developing an optimization model for a client considering a second warehouse in Europe, and running a warehouse analysis to make operations more time-efficient. “I’ve seen several different warehouses and logistics systems already. That lets me compare them, and I keep getting a better picture of how logistics actually works.” Her econometrics background helps directly: “I’m not writing simulations in Python myself anymore, but the experience of how simulation works still applies, furthermore, I could use the optimization techniques I learned during my studies.” She also spent time on the warehouse floor itself. “I enjoy the analytical work more, but knowing what it’s like on the floor makes the advice you give more credible.”

Guidance and development
On every project, Anne works together with a managing consultant. “I really like that I can always ask questions whenever I get stuck. And I genuinely notice that they’re willing to take the time to help me move forward.” 4Supplychain is also open when it comes to training: when she started, Anne took several consulting trainings, and since then she’s also completed a course to better understand a specific simulation tool. Another course focused on personal development is already planned. “Most of the courses come from Paul and Jasper, who really think about what’s valuable for me, or for anyone joining the company.” On top of that, she’s encouraged to build her own network, for example by occasionally grabbing coffee with people from her studies.

Work-life balance
Alongside the work itself, there’s regularly room for get-togethers: daily lunches at the office, monthly drinks or borrels, and something bigger every couple of months, like a triathlon or a boat trip. In September, the whole team is heading to Rome for a weekend away.

The balance between office, client, and working from home also suits her well. “I like coming into the office a few times a week to see my colleagues, but it’s also good that you can work from home when that fits better. For one client, I was on-site about once a week, and that really helps to build a relationship and show that you’re genuinely engaged with the project.”

Future ambitions
Anne wants to keep sharpening her advice and get better at turning data into a clear story, while taking on new projects to broaden her logistics knowledge. Her advice to future colleagues: “If you like working in a small team and want to make something fun of it together, I’d definitely recommend 4Supplychain.” Everyone wants to contribute, to help 4Supplychain to grow and stay an enjoyable company.
